Titel: Permanently adding new programs to a USB-installed Live-CD  BeitragVerfasst am: 28.08.2006, 08:44 Uhr

I am about to install a Live-CD distro to a USB-key, but I still have an important question I surprisingly cannot find the answer to:

Is it possible to permanently add new programs to a USB-installed Live-CD distro without needing to recreate the iso and putting it back onto the USB-key?

I know my settings can be saved, but is there a way to experience a USB-installation almost as an hdd-installation in this sense, i.e. freely installing more programs?
I guess I still nedd a unionfs-type filesystem in order not to put my USB-key to death, so a true hdd-installation on the USB-key is not recommended i suspect.
I suppose I could find the solution to this matter by trial-and-error but what would be the point with forums then. Winken

Thank's ockham23! Do you know if this solution writes the new changes to the USB-key at system exit only or if the key is updated continually (hence wearing out the flash)?

As far as I know, changes during the session are written to ramdisk only.
Anyway, I wouldn't recommend using a flash drive to store system files. If you're going to use Kanotix on a regular basis, you should explore one of these options:
- install Kanotix to hard drive; after all, that's what it's designed for Winken
- put the iso file, your persistent home directory and a swap file on the hard drive
- install Kanotix as a virtual machine within VMware Server/Workstation for Windows.

Yes, I completely agree with your alternatives but I wanted this to work for the pure joy of it Smilie. I also like the idea of showing this of to non-Linux friends without having to use a noisy CD drive.

Noisy CD drive? Well, use cheat code "fromiso". And if you have at least 1 GB of RAM, you can combine "fromiso" and "toram" cheat codes. This will create a Kanotix system running entirely from RAM. Windows can't do that.
